A  Full Guide to Daily Circular Dry Brushing as a Foundational Ritual

Most skincare routines begin and end at the face. Daily circular dry brushing your skin starts somewhere different — consider your full blanket of skin, starting at your feet and ending with your face.

Circular dry brushing is a simple, tactile practice that helps reconnect us with ourselves and all of the skin we live in. When executed with consistency and intention, it becomes a foundational ritual and routine that supports your entire blanket of skin,  prepares your body for moisture, and encourages a more mindful relationship with self-care beyond your face.

At Seven 8ths, we view circular dry brushing as a practice that supports all of you, as well as your one blanket of skin. It is not a treatment or a quick fix. It is a practice that brings focused attention, increased circulation, gentle exfoliation, and deep pore cleansing rhythm back to your full body-care routine.

What Is Circular Dry Brushing?

Circular dry brushing(sometimes referred to as body brushing) is the practice of brushing dry skin with a natural bristle brush in a circular fashion before washing or bathing. The brush is placed on dry skin and moved in a gentle, intentional circular motion.Always begin at your feet and move upwards towards your heart. When you reach your face, use the same circular motion, but move downward towards your heart.

The objective is not abrasion. The objective is gentle manual exfoliation, increased circulation, and deep pore clearing. Circular dry brushing gently lifts surface buildup, encourages circulation at the skin’s surface, and clears the pores.

Regular and consistent practice helps keep the skin smoother, tighter, vibrant, and more resilient, with a more even complexion.

Why Circular Dry Brushing Supports the Skin

Your skin functions as one unit that protects, regulates, and connects your whole body. Yet your body’s skin is often treated as separate from and secondary to your face.

Circular dry brushing supports full-body skincare in several practical ways:

  • It helps remove surface buildup, allowing moisturizers to absorb more evenly.

  • It encourages increased circulation in your entire blanket of skin, supporting warmth, stimulation, and vitality.

  • It brings attention to areas of the body that are often rushed through or ignored.

  • It creates a natural transition from exfoliation to cleansing to moisturizing.

Over time, many people notice that their skin feels smoother, softer, and tighter. It holds hydration longer, looks more vibrant and their entire overall complexion is more even and radiant.

The Seven 8ths Approach to Dry Brushing

While traditional dry brushing often uses long, sweeping strokes, Seven 8ths always recommends a circular brushing motion.

Circular movements allow for gentler, more controlled pressure which provides more thorough exfoliation, more consistent pore clearing, and more even circulation and stimulation across the skin. This approach reduces the likelihood of skin abrasions or irritation and transforms dry brushing into a more focused, slower, and more grounding ritual or routine.

Circular dry brushing supports:

  • Regular and consistent exfoliation across the entire blanket of skin

  • A gentler, more focused and meditative rhythm

  • Increased attention to the often forgotten areas of the body

  • A reduced risk of abrasions, irritation or over brushing

This method reflects the Seven 8ths philosophy that skincare works best when it supports the whole self, the whole body, the whole skin.

How to Practice Circular Dry Brushing Daily

Choose the right brush
Select a natural bristle brush with medium/soft  to medium stiffness. The brush should feel firm and stimulating but never abrasive.

Always brush on dry skin
Body brushing is done before showering or bathing, on completely dry skin.

Use circular motions
Place the brush gently on the skin, then move in small or large circular motions, depending on the area of skin. Always begin with your feet first and move upwards towards your heart area. End with your face (your 1/8th) changing your circular motions to work downwards towards your heart area. Lift the brush between areas and reset before continuing.

Use gentle yet thorough pressure
The skin should feel stimulated and awake, not irritated. Pressure should always feel supportive of the process.

Spend time where your skin needs it most
Elbows, knees, heels, feet, hands, and other dry areas benefit from extra attention. Always be gentle yet thorough.

Brush regularly and consistently
Five to seven times per week is ideal. Some prefer mornings for an energizing start, others prefer evenings as a grounding close to the day.

Facial Brushing Considerations

When brushing the face, use a softer brush than you use for your body. Moving in small circles, use gentle yet thorough pressure, avoiding the eye area. Facial skin is thinner and more delicate and should always be approached like all skin, with focused attention and deliberate care.

What to Do After Circular Dry Brushing

After circular dry brushing, shower as usual to rinse away loosened skin cells. While the skin is still slightly damp, apply your Seven 8ths nourishing moisturizer.

Freshly brushed skin is more receptive to absorbing hydration and moisture, making this the ideal moment to apply body milk, body cream, and face moisturizer. This step completes the ritual, turning dry brushing into a preparatory process rather than an isolated task.

Choose hydration textures that feel supportive and grounding, and allow application to be slow and intentional.

Precautions to Keep in Mind

Avoid dry brushing broken, irritated, or inflamed skin.

If your skin is very thin or overly sensitive, brush less frequently and use gentler pressure. More pressure or longer sessions do not lead to better results.

Dry brushing should always feel supportive, stimulating, and restorative.

Making Circular Dry Brushing a Ritual or Routine

Circular dry brushing is a way to reconnect with both yourself and your full blanket of skin. It is a beginning step in building a regular and consistent whole-body care routine or ritual.

When practiced daily, it becomes a solid foundation of self-care. One that prepares the skin, grounds the senses and the body, and reinforces the fact that caring for your whole self, your whole blanket of skin, is an act of  showing reverence for self.

At Seven 8ths, we believe regular and consistent rituals shape how we care for our whole selves. Circular dry brushing is one of the easiest places to begin.
